ASBESTOS
Was your home built before 1978?
If the answer is NO - good news. Post 1978 homes probably won't have any asbestos worth worrying about. In 1978, asbestos was banned from insulating materials. it is possible that asbestos may be found in other materials such as vinyl flooring tiles, which are not usually a hazard because the fibers are so tightly bound within the tiles. If you plan to remove vinyl floor tiles, have them tested for asbestos.
If they do contain it, have them removed by professionals who have the training to take care not to release the fibers into your home or location.
If your home WAS built before 1978 then you may have some things to consider.
Asbestos was common in boiler and pipe insulation prior to 1978. However, the insulation wrapping your basement pipes todaymay be different than the original. You cannot tell justby looking. An asbestos professional needs to evaluate the material and its condition. Find a reputable company to do this by contacting your state health department's asbestos contact.
